City of Sullivan named 2014 IMUA Member Community of the Year

Citing the city an example of a community that has taken the initiative to assure a continued quality of life for its citizens, Kevin Gaden, President & CEO of the Illinois Municipal Utilities Association (IMUA), named Sullivan as the 2014 IMUA Member Community of the Year.

Sullivan Mayor Ann Short and Sullivan Distribution Foreman Shannon Risley were on hand to accept the award at a ceremony held on May 15 in Springfield.

Gaden praised the city’s commitment to infrastructure improvements that, while they may go unnoticed by citizens, add improve the living conditions and business climate of a community. Gaden pointed out that over the past few years Sullivan has modernized and upgraded both its municipal electric generation and distribution system.

Improvements at the power plant include the installation of three new 2.5 megawatt CAT generating units to comply with new federal emissions requirements and the overhaul five existing Fairbanks-Morse generating units engines for conversion to emergency back-up use. The city also recently upgraded a nearly seven-mile-long section of a electric lines from Sullivan to Bethany – including numerous pole replacements and related support structures – to help ensure reliability for its customers.

Additionally the city also has taken advantage of incentives offered through the IMEA Electric Efficiency Program and the Illinois Clean Energy Foundation to upgrade the lighting in its municipal buildings.

Sullivan is also an active, longtime member of IMUA’s monthly Safety & Training Program, and continues to take the steps necessary to ensure the continued education of its municipal work force, said Gaden.
